Greenfield ProjectA Greenfield Town Square for the Next 150 YearsThe community of Greenfield, Iowa, the county seat of Adair County in southwest Iowa, sits among miles of rolling hills covered with corn and cattle. And in the center of the community is a picturesque courthouse and town square just as would be seen on a postcard of decades ago. In 1998 the Greenfield Main Street Design Committee began the process of revitalizing their historic town square. Numerous groups from City government and local business, citizens, and design professionals provided input as to the needs of the central business district and courthouse square. The ideas flowed and formed, and concluded that a reconstruction of the current square, while preserving its heritage and uniqueness, would ensure its usefulness for the future. "The square project was badly needed since nothing except sealcoating had been done to it since it was originally paved in the '30's... The mayor and council had the full support of the other organizations in town - Chamber/Mainstreet Community Development Corporation, utilities, and all the businesses on the square that were impacted... The project was well received by virtually everyone." - Robert Guikema, Greenfield Mayor 1994-2007 CGA served as engineers and construction inspectors for the reconstruction of the streets, sidewalks, alleyways, water, sewer, and storm sewer for the downtown area. The two and a half million dollar project consisted of 16,572 square yards of pavement, as well as 16,281 hand-placed bricks to highlight the architecture around the square. A sense of pride in the community's focal point is intertwined with the ribbons of brick. A fitting base for the next one hundred and fifty years of downtown Greenfield.
The Greenfield Town Square Improvement Project is the recipient of the Best Public Improvements Project - Streetscape / Enhancement of the Main Street Iowa Program during the past year. Awarded on April 18th, this honor for the Greenfield City Council and Design Committee shows Governor Culver's and Main Street Iowa's recognition for projects in this category. |
